Notes The book is bound in dark blue cloth with gilt spine printing and an embossed design on the boards. There is a bookplate (no name; looks like fancy initials printed on it) on the front pastedown and very slight wear to the corners and slight shelf-bumping to spine ends, but otherwise a clean, tight, excellent condition book. 16 pages of ads of books previously published by this publisher at end of text, plus there is a small sticker on the back pastedown giving the name of the book's binder (Bound by Westleys & Co. London). The author argues that science and religion are not incompatible and that there is no scientific or religious reason to suppose that intelligent life exists only on Earth. He examines physical properties of our solar system and planets and sun, and approaches his thesis on the known-in-his-era scientific facts. His last paragraph states: 'Thus then we see with scientific certainty that neither on account of deficient or excessive light, nor on account of deficient of excessive heat, nor with regard to the density of the materials, nor with regard to the force of gravity upon the surfaces is there the slightest pretext for supposing that all the planets of our system are not inhabited by intellectual creatures with animal bodies like ourselves,- moral beings who know and love their Great Maker, and who wait, like the rest of His creation, upon the providences and upon His care.' Quite an advanced thinker on both religious considerations and scientific matters, considering the degree of interplanetary knowledge available in his age. A couple of his other books are 'The Mission and Martyrdom of St. Peter' and 'The Nature and Elements of the External World'. ; 7" x 4-3/8"; 238 + Ads pages
