F/F. 1st edition/1st printing of the hardback book format of this adventure (a much shorter article about the trip was published previously in the New Yorker). Mr. Matthiessen wrote a magnificent account about a trip a group of naturalists (including him) who went to the Bering Sea area to see and write about Arctic life, its wildlife, plants and climate and, more importantly for the Eskimos, to bring back a large group of live musk ox calves to show that raising them for their fine wool could make a real contributio n to the precarious Eskimo economy. Liberally illustrated with B&W photographs, by the author and others on the trip. Fine, clean, straight and tight book bound in red cloth over boards with silver gilt printing and decoration, with the title on the front panel in black printing.
