1st edition/1st printing. Priority of states unknown per Ahearn but considered as 2nd state with no period between 'talk' and 'this' on page 112, line 11, the copyright page mentions 'Haddon Craftsmen' but not 'Haddon of Kingsport' and the back panel of what is called the rough texture dustjacket (also 2nd state since all 4 flap corners have been publisher clipped) has 'The Men in the Services Need Books.' Near Fine clean & tight book bound in blue cloth with silver gilt spine lettering/decoration with title/author blindstamped on front binding panel. This book has just a touch of upper end spine cocking and mild shelfwear to spine ends cloth (darkening the cloth edges somewhat). The Very Good price-clipped dustjacket has shallow chipping/sur face rubbing to spine ends, tiny flap fold edge nicks, a couple of small surface-only scratches with color loss to mid-spine area and another small scratch on the front panel right under the author's name. There is also fading to part of the red of 'Steinbeck', Viking's address (also in red) and the narrow red lines around the upper portion of the text on the back panel of the dustjacket in the area near the spine. A very nice book that is clean, firmly bound and has no handwriting or soiling in it, in a clean, unrestored dj with several small flaws but that is still quite handsome (protected now with a removable clear mylar cover).
