Condition Definitions

Source: Authors & Artists (based on IOBA's original definitions, shown as used by Authors & Artists | aaabooks.com, since 1999)

(Condition shown separately as __/__, i.e., F/F, denoting first book condition & then dustjacket condition.)

AS NEW (AN) or VERY FINE (VF): Without faults or defects, unread, in the same immaculate condition in which the book or dustjacket was published. Few books or dustjackets qualify for these grades as many come from the publisher with tiny defects or faults.

FINE (F): Approaches the above, but not quite as crisp. May show slight signs of having been very carefully read or handled, but no real defects to either book or dustjacket.

(Note: From here on, there can be "+" or "-" in a grade, which will mean that it is above the grade noted but not quite to the next higher grade for "+" or that it is below the grade noted but not quite to the next lower grade for "-").

NEAR FINE: A book or dustjacket approaching FINE but with a few very minor defects. All defects will be noted in the description.

VERY GOOD: A standard nice used book or dustjacket showing some signs of wear. All defects will be noted in the description.

GOOD: A below average condition used book or dustjacket showing multiple signs of wear. All defects will be noted in the description.

FAIR: A worn book or dustjacket. Complete text but may be lacking endpages, etc. All defects will be noted in the description.

POOR or READING COPY: A book that is so worn and has so many major defects that its only merit is as a reading copy. A poor dustjacket is normally too tattered to be repairable. All defects will be noted in the description.

EX-LIBRARY: Always will be noted as such no matter what actual condition the book or dustjacket is in. All ex-library marks, alterations or defects will be noted in the description.

BOOK CLUB: Always will be noted as such no matter what actual condition the book or dustjacket is in. All defects will be noted in the description.

BINDING COPY: A book in which the text block and any illustrations are complete but the binding is missing, or the binding is in such poor condition that it is beyond realistic restoration efforts. All defects will be noted in the description.

REMAINDER MARKS, BOOKPLATES, PREVIOUS OWNER'S NAME, PRICE CLIPPING: Each is always noted in the description.

If known to have been issued with one, the lack of a dustjacket or slipcase will always be noted in the description.
